About Us
The Chamber of Trade has been active in developing the history and fabric of Exmouth for over a hundred years, in fact since 1896. It has become the Town’s leading representative of trade and commerce and represents a significant number of businesses.
We are often consulted by Government, Local Government and other responsible bodies over important decisions on the development of Exmouth . Members of our Executive committee contribute their time and skills to organisations in the Town and the Chamber gives help whenever it can to support activities for the community – representatives are presently working with the Town Council on the Town management Committee, the C.A.B. management and the recently appointed Town manager is partly financed by the Chamber.
The Exmouth Town Guide is produced by the Chamber and except for a short period in the 70’s have done so since the 1920’s. The Tourist Information Centre (the T.I.C.) was opened by the Chamber on 1st April, 1927 and it is still responsible for its operation.
The Chamber started both the Summer and Winter Carnivals; it still organises and runs the Xmas lighting each year with financial support from our members and the Town Council, and other businesses and organisations within the Town..
The Chamber is always looking for new members and in particular those who are willing to join the Executive and become involved in helping the Town’s business base to develop.
Its activities include:
- Xmas lighting (in conjunction with the Town Council)
- The Executive meets monthly to discuss matters of current importance.
- Periodically open meetings are held for the benefit of all members. Notice is given in the press and by notice to members.
- Members of the Executive serve on the Town Management Committee and work closely both with the Town Clerk and John Furze, the Town Manager.
- Town development is watched closely and representations are made if considered appropriate.
- The Town Guide is produced annually by the Chamber and discounts for advertising in this publication and on the “Exmouth-guide” website are available to members.
